10 Music Apps for iPad & iPhone

10 MUSIC APPS for iPad & iPhone

Using technology to learn music, why not?
Here's some MUSIC APPS for iPad & iPhone...

1. MusDiction – a handy dictionary of over 400 definitions of common musical terms, in alphabetical order.

2. Music Theory Pro – very useful tool for amateurs and professional musicians.

Practice by sight: note names, key signatures, chords, intervals. Practice by ear: tempos, intervals, chords, scales. Settings allow you to set your own difficulty level.

Nota – “…..a set of indispensable tools for musicians at any level. It has a piano chord and scale browser, a piano and staff note locator, a note quiz and a reference library with over 100 symbols” (from Nota website)

3. Piano Street – online free scores site now has a mobile application, offering thousands of copyright-free classical piano scores to download and view or print on your mobile.

*Direct your mobile device to www.m.pianostreet.com and then add to your home screen. You need a Piano Street account to access this site.

4. Musician’s Practice Journal – manage your daily practice routine and track your progress. Easily log practice time and speed.

5. Metronome – there are various metronome apps available. I use a free one which looks like a traditional metronome. It is very basic. Metronome Tempo 2 has favorable reviews and is more sophisticated.

6. forScore2 – this powerful app allows you to download PDFs of scores direct from the web to view on your iPad.

Annotation tool, enabling you to mark up your own scores, including highlighting tricky sections, notes to self, and other annotations.

Other features:
visual metronome, metadata (allowing for easy organisation of scores), half-page turns, bookmark function. Mac utility allows you to edit some PDF file metadata for use with mobile app. Other extras include bluetooth and wired page turners.

7. iTalk – voice memo app for recording yourself playing. It is imperfect, in many ways, as the sound quality is not great. However, sound files can be synced to my Mac, edited using a music editing suite, and then stored in iTunes.

SILLY & FUN APPS

9. Cat Piano – a mini piano keyboard and a variety of “kitty voices”, including ‘angelic meow’, ‘furball’, ‘asthmatic kitty’ and ‘forlorn’

10. Bloom – “Developed by ambient pioneer Brian Eno and musician / software designer Peter Chilvers, Bloom explores uncharted territory in the realm of applications for the iPhone and iPod touch. Part instrument, part composition and part artwork, Bloom’s innovative controls allow anyone to create elaborate patterns and unique melodies by simply tapping the screen”.
